Definition

Bandit testing (also known as multi-armed bandit testing) is an optimization method that automatically allocates more traffic to better-performing options while continuing to test new variations.

Unlike traditional A/B testing, which usually splits traffic evenly between versions, bandit testing continuously learns from results and shifts traffic toward the option that is generating better outcomes.

What It Means in Ecommerce & Dropshipping

In ecommerce and dropshipping, bandit testing is often used to optimize marketing campaigns, product pages, pricing, and website elements.

It can help businesses test different versions of:

  • Product images
  • Headlines and descriptions
  • Landing pages
  • Offers and discounts
  • Advertising creatives
  • Call-to-action buttons

As the system collects performance data, it gradually sends more visitors to the version that is more likely to drive conversions.

Bandit Testing vs. A/B Testing

The key difference is how traffic is distributed:

  • A/B Testing: Traffic is usually split evenly between versions until enough data is collected.
  • Bandit Testing: Traffic allocation changes dynamically based on real-time performance.

Bandit testing can reduce the cost of showing weaker-performing variations because it quickly favors better options.

Example

A dropshipping store wants to test two product page headlines:

  • Version A: “Premium Portable Blender for Healthy Living”
  • Version B: “Make Fresh Smoothies Anywhere in Seconds”

The bandit testing system initially shows both versions to visitors. If Version B generates more purchases, the system automatically sends more traffic to Version B while still testing whether the result remains consistent.

Why It Matters

Bandit testing helps ecommerce businesses make faster optimization decisions while minimizing lost sales from underperforming versions.

For dropshipping stores running paid ads or frequently testing products and creatives, bandit testing can improve conversion rates and marketing efficiency by continuously adapting to customer behavior.
