Ecommerce Trends To Look Out For In 2022

So much has happened in 2021, as we are wrapping up this year we think it might be helpful if we run you through some top eCommerce trends that are going to be seen in the upcoming year.

The eCommerce future is bright💡

According to Shopify, more than 150 million people made their first purchases online in 2020 due to the impact of Coronavirus. That's a huge chunk of people starting to shop online!

2022 is expected to bring a lot of incredible tools and trends as eCommerce is a constantly changing industry with rapidly evolving technologies and a competitive environment. Let’s take a look at some upcoming trends for 2022.

Utilize AI in your webshop

One of the biggest and the most exciting trends upcoming in 2022 has to be using AI in your shop.

- Upselling & cross-selling

Move a portion of your budget to invest in machine learning AI. AI is amazing at predicting shopping habits based on the visitor’s shopping history. Here’s what AI could do for you when it comes to upselling & cross-selling:

  • Identify preferences from product styles and colors to product functionality and types.

Like ASOS, shows a “you might also like” section, recommending customers related products that they’re looking at.

  • Suggest similar products that are related to the visitor’s current shopping session that match their interests and needs.

Like the Amazon-famous “frequently bought together” or The Art of Shaving’s “frequently bought with”. Let customers know what goes great will the product they’re about to purchase or even remind them what they’re missing.

  • Offer a “complete look”  or product bundles to demonstrate how other products would go with the products that's added to the cart.

SheIn's "Get The Look" gives outfit options and let visitors shop the style's pieces.

- Customer support

AI is also widely used in customer service and boosting customer experience with brands.

1. AI Chatbots

AI chatbots support your business by rapidly answering customers’ questions 24/7 and increasing conversion and helping you to improve your service and website.

Let’s say you sell kitchenware in your shop, and you offer multiple kinds of spatula with different materials and use. A customer can’t decide between two of them, because he wants to know whether they both work on nonstick pans, so he heads over to the chatbot and asks. There are a couple of great outcomes that come out of this:

First. Improve conversion rate.

You solve the customer’s problem right away and he continues to check out.

Second. Improve the website.

You understand that you should have this kind of information listed in the description to reduce consideration time and boost conversion.

Third. Improve recommendations for customers.

You know that this customer owns non-stick pans so you can suggest other products that are suitable for him or remarket the same product to him if he didn’t proceed to checkout.

2. Collect Big Data

Collect important information like demographics, how they convert, preferable devices and more. AI can analyze data from CRM platforms and turn them into visual reports, easier for you to make decisions on future marketing events.

- Augmented Reality

Now, this might not be for all eCommerce businesses but it is a trend that a lot of businesses are investing in. Using AI to create a better shopping experience for your customers.

This is a great way for stores that sell both retail and online while COVID continues to spread, it gives the customers a great shopping experience like in physical stores. Here are some examples:

Warby Parker - virtual fitting app to find the perfect glasses for you
So you get to try the glasses at home.

Sephora - virtual artist
Test out different makeup looks and what they look like on your face.

IKEA - IKEA Place lets you virtually place furniture in your space.

Gucci - partnering with Snapchat to create a shoe shopping mall for users to try on virtually and redirect Snapchat users to the product page if they decided to buy what they tried on.

Mobile Commerce and Social Commerce

Did you know that the number of smartphone users went up by 73.88% within a short five years?

According to Statista, there are 6.3 billion smartphone users in 2021 worldwide and is expected to grow another 4.2% to 6.6 billion in 2022. So it is pretty obvious that online shops for mobile phones are a trend that is still ongoing. 79% of smartphone users have made a purchase online using their mobile devices in the last 6 months. It is a must now to make sure that your webshop is mobile and tablet friendly.

If not, you are potentially missing out on more profit as the mobile eCommerce trends continue to grow.

And it goes the same with linking your shop with social media like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok (Shopify & TikTok Business account in the US & UK), Snapchat (US-based Shopify store only), Pinterest, and other social platforms. Many eCommerce businesses are already on them so catch up if you aren’t.

Facebook and Instagram specifically, have been linking users to product landing pages since 2018. Last year they launched the new feature of purchasing products directly in the Facebook and Instagram apps. Brands are able to reach out to more potential customers and without needing to redirect them to the website to complete the sales funnel.

Although most of them are not available outside of the US and UK, it’s expected to be accessible soon as eCommerce evolves every day.

Simplified Payment Process

We’ve all bought things online, I don’t know about you but I definitely hate the feeling that I have to go through so many steps just to checkout.

Improve your shop with some of these features:

  • Enable guest checkouts: Don’t require visitors to register before checking out, you can delay it to when they’ve placed an order.
  • Simplify the payment form: Hide fields like billing address and address line 2.
  • Identify enter-errors in contact or address fields: fewer errors also mean fewer problems caused in the future such as shipping and complaints.
  • Minimize distractions on the Check Out page: Remove any distractions like social media links or subscription popups when your visitor is in the checkout process.
  • Easy cart management: Allow your visitors to alter changes within the shopping cart without having to leave the checkout page.

Diversity and Fast Payment Methods

Another thing that customers don’t like is after filling out all the details and arriving at the very end to find out there are no preferred payment methods.

As we talked about the M-commerce trend before, considering some digital wallet payment methods like Apple Pay and Google Pay where they can make their purchases in one click is a great way to retain customers. Or use services like Afterpay for your customers to buy now and pay later. It is expected that digital wallets will be an account for almost a third of all payments. Get your business in the game early and be prepared.

Some trends continued from 2021

Omnichannel

Omnichannel is one of the trends that is going to continue as we go into 2022. Seamless online purchase is still what consumers are looking for in 2022. Being seen in as many places as possible means a higher possibility of converting visits into sales. You will also be able to provide a better customer experience by gathering information about a customer from omnichannel.

Sustainable. Sustainable. Sustainable.

Brands can no longer rely on their name to seal the deal. It has been a topic going on for the past few years, consumers are asking for more sustainable made or sourced products.

Some ways to change your business little by little towards the sustainable route:

  • Sustainable Packaging: Start by sourcing more sustainable packaging, less waste, and reusable and recyclable material.
  • Consider Sustainable Shipping Methods: such as UPS’ carbon neutral shipping or paperless-invoice shipping from FedEx.
  • Give Back To The Environment: Plant a tree or two after a certain amount of purchase or donate them to related organizations.

It is also a great selling point, you can list what you’re doing and let your visitors know that they are purchasing from a business that is trying to make a change in the industry.

Customized Products

And finally, to wrap it up, the last trend is customized products. Customers will continue to love customized products in 2022, with how the industry is developing, POD and MOD are now super easy to achieve. This is also a great way to generate extra sales.

It doesn’t necessarily mean that you customized an entire product, sometimes it’s about giving extra options such as:

  • Dress Up Your Standard Products: Letting the customer choose to add ons to an existing product

Ralph Lauren allows customers to choose logo size or add a flag to the polo shirt.

  • Made To Order: let your customers decide what they like.

Knockaround customizable sunglasses - choose frame and lens colors as well as logo material.
