Definition

GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) is a globally recognized product identification system used to uniquely identify products in retail, ecommerce, and supply chains.

A GTIN is not a specific barcode format itself, but an umbrella standard that includes product identifiers such as UPC, EAN, and ISBN.

What It Means in Dropshipping

In dropshipping and ecommerce, GTINs help ensure that products can be accurately identified across marketplaces, suppliers, warehouses, and logistics providers.

Many ecommerce platforms and marketplaces require a GTIN when creating product listings because it helps:

  • Prevent duplicate listings
  • Improve product catalog accuracy
  • Simplify inventory management
  • Enable barcode scanning and tracking
  • Match products across different sales channels

The most common GTIN formats used in ecommerce are:

  • GTIN-12: UPC (primarily used in the United States and Canada)
  • GTIN-13: EAN (commonly used internationally)
  • GTIN-14: Used for grouped or packaged products

Not all dropshipping products have GTINs, especially generic or unbranded items, but branded products often require them.

Example

Imagine you sell branded headphones through an online marketplace.

When creating the product listing, you enter the product’s GTIN. The marketplace uses this identifier to verify the product, connect it to existing catalog data, and manage inventory and fulfillment more accurately.

Why It Matters

GTINs provide a universal standard for product identification across the global supply chain.

For dropshipping businesses, using valid GTINs can improve marketplace compliance, reduce listing errors, and streamline inventory and fulfillment operations.
